The first contract, worth 12.97 billion lei and financed through the 2021-2027 Transport Programme, was signed by Metrorex, the transport ministry, and the Bucharest Sector 4 municipality and aims to fund the extension of the existing M4 metro line by 12 kilometres, Grindeanu said in a Facebook post on Tuesday. The extended line will pass through Bucharest Sectors 1, 4 and 5 as well as through the commune of Jilava, Ilfov county.

The Bucharest Sector 4 municipality is running a public tender until June 27 for the design and execution contract. The company that wins the tender will have 60 months to complete the project, with eight months allotted for the design stage and 52 months dedicated to the construction phase.

The second contract, with a value of 9.33 billion lei and funded through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), was signed by Metrorex and the transport ministry and will finance the design and construction of the new 6.6 km M6 metro line. The construction of the new line is expected to be finalised in 2026, Grindeanu said.

The M6 metro line will connect central Bucharest to the Henri Coanda International Airport, Metrorex said in a separate statement on Tuesday.

Romania's 2021-2027 Transport Programme is a strategic initiative designed to modernise the country's transportation infrastructure. With a total value of 9.6 billion euro, the programme receives 4.6 billion euro in funding from the European Union.
