November 18 (SeeNews) - German discount supermarket chain Lidl said it opened a new logistics center in Lugoj, Timis county, in western Romania, following a 20 million euro ($21.2 million) investment.
The new logistics centre has a total built-up area of over 45,000 sq m, a land surface of 160,000 sq m and employs some 200 people, the company said in a press release on Thursday.
Lidl partnered with construction firm Bog'Art in the building of the centre.
"An important factor in choosing the land was the proximity to the A1 and A6 highways which allows us to optimize our transport routes and, implicitly, helps us reduce the impact on the environment,” Lidl Romania's regional development manager Claudiu Riza said.
In Romania, the retailer has logistics centres also in the cities of Ploiesti, Chiajna and Iernut.
Lidl is part of Germany's Schwarz Gruppe which also operates the Kaufland retail chain.
Lidl has been present in Romania since 2005 and operates 200 discount supermarkets.
