October 24 (SeeNews) - Kosovo's Pristina International Airport plans to invest some 30 million euro ($32.7 million) in new equipment and extension of its runway, it said on Monday without giving a timeframe.
The airport told SeeNews in an e-mail that it is going to extend its 2,569 m runway to 3,000 m to improve visibility which is often poor due to the airport's location and foggy winter weather. It will also invest in an instrument landing system and replace part of its equipment with newer technology.
Pristina airport expects passenger numbers to increase by 11.1% to 1.8 million in 2016, it said.
The airport aims to launch new routes, with the next targeted destinations being New York, Helsinki, Dortmund, Memmingen, Milan, Amsterdam, Rome, and Malmo. Prishtina airport is focused mainly on attracting low cost companies.
Recently, UK's low-cost air carrier easyJet added Pristina-Paris route offered twice weekly.
The airport is managed by a consortium of Turkish group Limak and French airport operator Aeroports de Lyon under a 20-year concession contract signed in 2010.
