July 20 (SeeNews) - US digital infrastructure company Equinix said on Thursday that it has expanded its data centre operations in Bulgaria at a cost of 12 million US dollars (10.7 million euro).
The expanded second International Business Exchange (IBX) data centre in Sofia has been put into operation, doubling the current capacity in terms of cabinet equivalent (CabE) to 700, Equinix said in a press release.
Equinix opened its second data centre in the Bulgarian capital in April 2019, following a $19 million investment.
"Despite the challenges facing global and local supply chains, with significant increases in equipment delivery times, capacity is being expanded on schedule and within the timeline originally set in Equinix's investment plan," said Zdravko Nikolov, managing director of Equinix Bulgaria. He added that the expansion will benefit most Bulgarian companies seeking quick and easy access to cloud services and new global markets.
At present, Equinix Bulgaria facilitates 16 petabits (Pb) of traffic to countries including Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Qatar, Iraq, Iran and Turkey, with a significant portion of the data traffic also managed by the company's first data centre which opened in 2016. Both facilities use 100% of renewable energy, the data centre provider said.
The Nasdaq-listed Equinix operates 248 data centres in 32 countries, serving clients in sectors such as fintech, pharmaceuticals, automotive and media. In Bulgaria, Equinix's client portfolio includes providers of cloud services, network operators, big corporations and media companies.
