February 19 (SeeNews) - The Bucharest Airports National Company, CNAB, said on Friday that it has completed repair works worth 127 million lei ($32 million/26 million euro) on Runway 2 of Henri Coanda International Airport.
The runway is now operational over its entire length of 3,500 metres, CNAB said in a press release late.
Following the overhaul, the Pavement Classification Number (PCN) load-bearing capacity of the runway was raised from 80 to 93 RDWT, while its flight processing capacity increased by 20%.
The works mainly consisted in changing the concrete slabs on the tread, restoring the embankment and modernising the beacon system. They took five months and were performed by PORR Construct, the local subsidiary of Austrian group PORR, with local company Consitrans as consultant.
CNAB operates Bucharest's main airport, Henri Coanda, and a smaller one, Aurel Vlaicu. Combined passenger traffic at the two airports plummeted 70% year-on-year to 4.468 million passengers in 2020.
CNAB was created in 2010 through the merger of companies that managed Henri Coanda and Aurel Vlaicu airports.
