BELGRADE (Serbia), January 23 (SeeNews) – Serbia's president Aleksandar Vucic said the construction of the first metro line in Belgrade will be completed by the beginning of 2022.
The government has enough money for the construction of Belgrade Metro as a result of the fiscal consolidation measures, Vucic said in a video file posted on the YouTube channel of Cirilica TV programme of Serbian private broadcaster Happy TV on Monday.
"We will do it because it is indispensable for Belgrade," Vucic said.
In November 2016, Serbia said it presented a project for the construction of Belgrade Metro before representatives of French civil engineering groups Alstom and Egis. Belgrade city authorities developed a master plan for the project and were working on a feasibility study, the mayor of Belgrade, Sinisa Mali, said back then.
Serbian media reported in October 2016 that the construction of a metro line in Belgrade is expected to begin at the end of 2018 if all conditions are met. The media reports suggested that Russian companies will participate in the project.
In July 2017, the Belgrade city government unveiled a transport masterplan which includes the development of a metro network. The plan envisages the construction of two metro lines, 22 kilometres and 19.8 kilometres in length, respectively, with construction works expected to take between three and four years.
