March 26 (SeeNews) - Bosnia received on March 25 the first 26,400 doses of AstraZeneca's Covid-19 vaccine and 23,400 doses of Pfizer's vaccine through the global COVAX vaccine sharing mechanism, local media reported.
Bosnia has ordered a total of 1.2 million vaccine doses through the COVAX mechanism, enough to immunize some 20% of its population, news daily Nezavisne Novine reported on Thursday.
Bosnia and Herzegovina, a country of some 3.3 million people, comprises two autonomous entities, the Federation and the Serb Republic, and self-governing Brcko District.
The two entities and Brcko district spent a total of $13 million (11 million euro) on the vaccines ordered through the COVAX mechanism. Bosnia signed the procurement agreement with the COVAX programme in September of last year.
COVAX is a global initiative aimed at providing countries with equitable access to safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines, once they are licensed and approved.
