October 24 (SeeNews) - Serbia and Slovenia agreed on Monday to continue their cooperation in the field of transport, the government in Belgrade said.
Serbia's transport and infrastructure minister Zorana Mihajlovic and her Slovenian counterpart Peter Gaspersic signed a memorandum of understanding on the continued cooperation in transport and the implementation of the priorities under the EU strategy for the Danube region, the government said in a statement.
The memorandum ensures continued work on improving transport links between the two countries by rail, road and air transport, according to the statement issued after a joint session of the two governments in Belgrade.
The cooperation between Serbia and Slovenia, as part of the EU strategy for the Danube region, began in 2011.
In a separate release, the prime ministers of both countries expressed their satisfaction with bilateral political relations and their will to strengthen economic cooperation.
Trade between Slovenia and Serbia reached 870 million euro ($946.4 million) last year, Serbian prime minister Aleksandar Vucic said, adding that trade should exceed 1 billion euro this year.
Vucic added that Slovenian companies employ 25,000 people in Serbia adn Slovenian investments in Serbia total 1.2 billion euro. Serbia has begun investing in Slovenia and has directed some 79 million euro into the country, mostly via its juice maker Nectar and its Slovenian-based unit Fructal.
The Serbian prime minister also noted that there are no outstanding issues between Slovenia and Serbia, except for a few arising from the succession of property following the breakup of the former Yugoslavia.
Slovenia's prime minister Miro Cerar said after the meeting that Slovenia would help Serbia on its path to European Union membership. He added that Serbia is an important stakeholder in the stability of the Western Balkans.
