September 25 (SeeNews) - The European Commission (EC) said it approved on Friday the allocation of 48 million euro ($56 million) from its Cohesion Fund to a project to build a new waste management system in the Croatian counties of Zadar and Lika-Senj.
The aim of the project is to reduce the volume of landfill waste and increase the volume of recycled and biodegraded waste, which is in line with Croatia's 2017-2020 waste management plan, the EC said in a statement.
The financing will help the country comply with its EU membership requirements and with EU legislation in the field.
By supporting separating and recycling waste, the project will also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while creating new jobs in the waste management sector, cohesion and reforms commissioner, Elisa Ferreira, said in the statement.
The new waste management system is expected to be completed by the summer of 2022.
The project will improve the living conditions of 195,000 people from eight towns and 33 municipalities in the Zadar and Lika-Senj counties, covering some 12% of Croatia's total land area.
