January 5 (SeeNews) - Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air said on Thursday it carried some 5.5 million passengers to and from Romania in 2016, up 23% on the year.
"Our ultra low-cost model is very effective and will enable us to continue our significant growth and to constantly expand our network to better serve passengers," Wizz Air CEO József Váradi said in a press release.
For this year, the operator has already announced the addition of new aircraft bases in Cluj-Napoca and Craiova and the initiation of 15 new routes to and from Romania.
In 2016, Wizz Air opened two new bases, in Iasi and Sibiu, and added a new aircraft to its fleet in Bucharest, expanding its fleet in the Romanian capital to nine aircraft.
Wizz Air has over 750 employees in Romania and a fleet of 20 aircraft, including five new 230-seat Airbus A321. The company has been present in Romania since 2007 and is currently offering 133 routes to 54 destinations from 10 Romanian airports.
The company carried over 23 million passengers globally last year, up by 21% as compared with 2015.
