June 15 (SeeNews) - US car seats maker Adient, previously known as Johnson Controls, officially opened on Thursday a plant worth $20 million (17.9 million euro) near the city of Strumica, close to the Bulgarian and Greek border, Macedonia's government said.
The government statement provided no further details about the plant.
The plant, which has an area of 13,000 sq m, will create 1,500 new jobs, former prime minister and VMRO-DPMNE Nikola Gruevski said on the website of his party.
Some 750 workers were already employed in the plant during the restructuring of the existing assets, and a further 400 are to be employed by the end of the year, Gruevski said.
Adient is a global leader in the production of automotive seating, instrument panels, cockpits, door panels, floor consoles, and overhead systems. In Macedonia it already operates two plants - in the capital Skopje and in Stip in eastern Macedonia.
