The police raided on Thursday the Sofia offices of Bulgaria-founded, Switzerland-headquartered cryptocurrency firm Nexo, the company told SeeNews, confirming earlier media reports.
"They are making AML [anti-money laundering] and tax-related inquiries about a Bulgarian entity of the group that is not customer-facing but only has back office functions - payroll, customer support, compliance," a company spokesperson told SeeNews.
"We are one of the most stringent entities with regards to KYC [Know Your Customer]/AML," the spokesperson stressed.
Bulgarian prosecutors, officers of the national investigative service and the national security agency, together with foreign service officers, are searching Nexo offices as part of a large-scale operation against financial crimes, the chief prosecutor's spokesperson said, as seen in a video broadcast by public television BNT.
In September, eight US states filed legal actions against a Cayman Islands-registered entity in the Nexo group in relation to unregistered crypto interest-bearing accounts.
