BUCHAREST (Romania), August 25 (SeeNews) – Austrian insurance group UNIQA said on Thursday its pre-tax loss from operations in Romania narrowed sharply to 0.4 million euro ($0.45 million) in the first half of the year from 2.4 million euro a year earlier.
Total gross written premiums from operations in Romania rose 29% to 52.5 million euro in the six months through June, UNIQA said in its annual financial report.
Gross written premiums in the non-life insurance segment amounted to 47 million euro, up 30% on the year. Premiums from life insurance were up 25% to 5.4 million euro in the first six months of the year.
In health insurance, gross written premiums grew an impressive 129% in the first half of the year to 100,000 euro.
The parent group's operating result dropped to 106.2 million euro in the six months through June from 190.8 million euro a year earlier, UNIQA said.
UNIQA is the second-largest insurance group in Austria with a market share of around 22%. It operates in 15 markets in Central and Eastern Europe. In Southeast Europe, UNIQA operates in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Kosovo, Romania, Macedonia, Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro.
