November 2 (SeeNews) - Serbian state-run rail freight operator Srbija Kargo said on Thursday Turkish sector player Turkrail plans to launch a regular container service to Austria via Serbia.
Turkrail plans to operate twice weekly the service that will link the Halkali hub in Turkey to the Wiencont terminal in Vienna, and to increase its frequency in the future, Srbija Kargo said in a statement.
The Turkish company will operate the first connection in a trial mode in order to determine the quality of the service and its potential relocation from the current route through Romania, Srbija Kargo said.
Srbija Kargo has set up a team to monitor the safety of each train of Turkrail crossing the territory of Serbia, the company added.
Srbija Kargo was established in August 2015 following the unbundling of railway operator Zeleznice Srbije into a holding company with three subsidiaries under the terms of a stand-by arrangement with the International Monetary Fund signed in February 2015.
