September 3 (SeeNews) - Turkey was the highest-ranked country in Southeast Europe (SEE) in the latest global competitiveness report published by the World Economic Forum and Albania was the region's worst performer, the report showed.
Five countries in SEE improved their positions in the rankings within a year, with Romania posting the sharpest increase, climbing up 17 places, the Global Competitiveness Report 2013-2014 indicated.
Four countries - Turkey, Slovenia, Croatia, and Albania - were assessed as less competitive than a year earlier. Montenegro kept its position unchanged from the previous year.
The ten SEE countries ranked between 45th and 97th among 144 countries included in the ranking. Their scores ranged from 3.8 to 4.5, where 10.0 indicates the highest level of global competitiveness and 1.0 indicates the lowest one.
The report assesses the ability of countries to provide high levels of prosperity to their citizens, depending on how productively a country uses available resources. It uses a global competitiveness index which measures factors such as macroeconomic stability, infrastructure, labour market efficiency, market size, business and financial market sophistication and technological readiness.
