BELGRADE (Serbia), August 6 (SeeNews) – State-controlled Telekom Srbija plans to compete for 5G licenses in a future auction for frequencies in Serbia, CEO Predrag Culibrk said.
"We do not have much choice when it comes to 5G. We will have to compete for 5G licenses and invest in 5G technology," Culibrk said in a video file posted on the website of Serbian news agency Tanjug on Thursday.
The 5G technology will attract many new players to the telecoms sector, Culibrk said during a panel discussion in the framework of the Digital 2019 telecommunications and media conference in Belgrade.
In June, the head of Serbia's telecommunications regulator Ratel said it plans to complete the preparation of the legal framework for the launch of a 5G frequency auction in 2020.
Trade minister Rasim Ljajic said last year that the government plans to call a tender in 2019 for allocation of frequencies in the 700 MHz band, the so-called second digital dividend band which is crucial for the development of 5G networks. The government plans to introduce 5G network on motorways and in Serbia's biggest cities by 2020 and to expand it to other parts of the country afterwards, Ljajic said.
