February 23 (SeeNews) - Romanian medical waste management company Stericycle, part of U.S.-based Stericycle, said on Thursday that it opened a new medical sterilisation facility in Oradea, in the west of the country, following a $1.6 million (1.5 million euro) investment.
The new unit enables Stericycle to increase its medical waste processing capacity by 800 tonnes per year, the company said in a press release.
Stericycle currently owns seven medical waste processing facilities in Romania, with the new unit reflecting the company’s commitment towards investments in Romania, Iulia Nartea, general manager at Stericycle Romania said.
The new site uses pressurised steam and high temperatures to sterilise and decontaminate medical waste collected from healthcare facilities in the region.
The technology employed at the unit also helps reduce water and energy consumption by recirculating heat generated during the sterilisation process. Gas usage is also reduced as clean condensed steam is used to pre-heat the boiler water.
In 2021, Stericycle Romania booked a net loss of 16.1 million lei ($3.5 million/3.3 million euro) on a 73.6 million turnover, latest data from the finance ministry shows.
