May 11 (SeeNews) - The recently completed spring sowing saw 1.1 million ha put under maize in Serbia, the director of local grain industry association Zita Srbije, Vukosav Savkovic, said on Monday.
The sunflower area is seen at some 170,000-180,000 ha this year with soybean area at 180,000 ha and sugar beet area at 45,000-50,000 ha, Savkovic said in an audio file posted on the website of news agency Tanjug.

If all goes well, Serbia will have enough crop yield to cover its own needs and will have a surplus for exports, the official added without elaborating.
According to data of Serbia's statistical institute, the maize area in the country totalled 1.09 million ha in 2014.
