April 13 (SeeNews) - Retailer Spar Croatia has more than doubled its central distribution centre capacity to around 16,000 square metres, Luxembourg-based company Logwin, in charge of running the logistics space, said.
Logwin has been managing a new Spar dry goods distribution centre in Sveta Nedelja, around 15 kilometres west of Zagreb, since November 2010, the logistics services company said in a statement on its website on Tuesday.
Since the beginning of this year, Logwin said it has also been responsible for operations at the new Spar fresh goods distribution centre also in Sveta Nedelja.
Before this, Logwin had been the in-house logistics service provider at the previous 6,700 square metre facility in Jankomir for three and a half years.
"The relocation has seen SPAR more than double its central distribution centre capacity: instead of the previous 6,700 square metres in Jankomir, the premises in Sveta Nedelja offer around 16,000 square metres."
Around 6,500 food and non-food items are handled at the Sveta Nedelja locations. The high bay warehouse with a ceiling height of 12 metres is located in a state-of-the-art logistics park.
Spar Croatia also moved into a 5,000 square metre refrigerated warehouse for dairy products, meat, fruit and vegetables on the same site in January.
In both facilities, Logwin has assumed the role of in-house logistics service provider, managing incoming goods inspection, storage, picking, retrieval, loading and value added services such as for instance labelling. Around 20,000 pallets are transhipped every month.
Spar has been continually expanding its network of stores in Croatia in recent months, the statement said. The retail group now operates 15 Interspar and three Spar supermarkets in Croatia.
“The expansion has seen the demand for reliable warehousing services grow. The new brief confirms both companies’ high level of mutual confidence,” Juergen Haemmerle, head of logistics at Spar's parent, Aspiag Management AG, said in the statement.
Logwin (www.logwin-logistics.com) has been involved in Croatia since 1994. The logistics service provider operates branches in Zagreb, Osijek, Vukovar and Tovarnik, employing around 100 staff. In Croatia, Logwin is serving retail and mechanical engineering customers, among others.
