November 4 (SeeNews) - Serbia and Montenegro Air Traffic Services (SMATSA) plans to start the construction of a new air traffic control tower at Serbia's Nis airport in 2021, SMATSA director Predrag Jovanovic has said.
"The process of acquisition of land for the construction of the tower and an alternative flight control centre is ongoing. Next year is the year of contractor selection, and 2021 is the year in which it will be built," Jovanovic said in a video file posted on the website of Serbian public broadcaster RTS on Saturday.
The new premises will come with new equipment, which will support the increase of passenger traffic at Konstantin Veliki Airport in Nis, Jovanovic said.
In May, flag carrier Air Serbia started the sale of tickets for subsidised services on 12 international destinations from Konstantin Veliki Airport. The first subsidised flights took off on July 15.
SMATSA was established by Serbia and Montenegro in 2003 as a limited liability company providing air navigation services, succeeding the previous federal air traffic control authority which was part of the ministry of transport.
