July 5 (SeeNews) - Slovenian civil engineering company SZ-ZGP has signed a 31.6 million euro ($35.6 million) deal for railway reconstruction works with Croatia's Rijeka port authority and railway infrastructure operator HZ Infrastruktura, the port authority said.
Of the total project financing, 26.8 million euro come from the EU's key growth promotion instrument, the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), the Rijeka port authority said in a statement on Thursday after the signing of the contract.
The project includes the reconstruction of the cargo part of Rijeka port's railway network and the construction of an intermodal terminal at the Zagreb Deep Sea Container Terminal (Zagreb DSCT), which was recently competed.
The project will help remove bottlenecks on the railway infrastructure of Rijeka's railway station, as well as improve Rijeka port's intermodal infrastructure with the relocation of cargo transport from road to railway. This will improve Rijeka port's connection with the Trans-European Transport Networks (TEN-T).
In May, Rijeka port said it has competed construction works on the Zagreb DSCT with investment in the new terminal amounting to 112.5 million euro.
The Zagreb DSCT was implemented within the Rijeka Gateway project, which aims to improve Rijeka port's transport and infrastructure network.
The terminal, 400 metres in length, is expected to be expanded to 680 metres later. Water at its berths is 20 meters deep, which will allow the port to receive the latest generation of container ships.
