December 31 (SeeNews) - Slovenian port operator Luka Koper [LJE:LKPG] expects to close 2021 with a record-high container throughput of 996,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), it said.
On December 29, the container terminal of Koper port beat the previous annual container throughput record of 988,501 TEUs set in 2018, Luka Koper said in a statement on Thursday.
"The management board of the company congratulates all the employees at the container terminal and thanks all company’s business partners. With such support and investments in capacity expansion, we will continue to maintain our status as the largest container terminal in the Adriatic”, the president of Luka Koper's management board, Bostjan Napast, said in the statement.
Luka Koper made investments worth 45.6 million euro ($51.6 million) in 2021 to increase the annual capacity of the terminal to 1.5 million TEUs. The port operator ordered two new super post-panamax container cranes, which will arrive in mid-2022, and is preparing the project documentation for the start of construction of the northern part of Pier 1, which will also process containers, Luka Koper noted.
