LJUBLJANA (Slovenia), August 13 (SeeNews) – Slovenian waste processing company Kemis will challenge a recent government decision ordering the demolition of waste processing facilities at the Vrhnika site, local media reported on Tuesday.
Kemis director Bostjan Simenc told state news agency STA that the company will launch an appeal against the decision of Slovenia's environment and spatial planning inspectorate, which orders the demolition of allegedly unlawfully built parts of the Vrhnika site following the summer 2017 fire at the facility.
Simenc did not elaborate on when the appeal will be launched.
Last week, Kemis said it suspended the shipping of waste to the Vrhnika site, some 20km southwest of the capital Ljubljana, after the environment and spatial planning inspectorate notified it that the reconstruction of parts of the site destroyed in the 2017 fire was unlawful.
The inspectorate has ordered Kemis to demolish the reconstructed parts by June 30, 2020, and to immediately cease waste processing activities on the land where they are located.
In May 2017, a fire destroyed part of the business premises of Kemis, including the warehouse for storage of low-hazard solid and liquid waste in Vrhnika. The fire engulfed hazardous waste stored at the location and intended for further processing, mainly fuels, waste oil, solvents and medicinal products.
