March 20 (SeeNews) - Slovenia's government said on Tuesday it has officially taken on a caretaker role after parliament accepted the resignation of prime minister Miro Cerar.
"The National Assembly, on the basis of Article 115 of the Constitution of the Republic of Slovenia and Article 261 of the Rules of Procedure of the National Assembly, concludes that Dr. Miroslav Cerar has ceased to act as prime minister," the parliament speaker, Milan Brglez, said on Tuesday.
Cerar and the ministers will continue to perform their duties until the election of a new prime minister and the appointment of new ministers, he added.
Last week, Slovenia's president Borut Pahor said he prefers to hold early parliamentary elections, rather than appoint a prime minister-designate. The elections will most likely take place mid-May.
Cerar resigned last Wednesday, after the Supreme Court annulled the outcome of last year’s referendum which backed the upgrade of the Divaca–Koper railway - his government’s biggest investment project.
Slovenia was already scheduled to hold parliamentary elections in June.
