LJUBLJANA (Slovenia), August 5 (SeeNews) – Slovenian port operator Luka Koper [LJE:LKPG] has picked a consortium of local companies GIC Gradnje and Pro-Concrete for the construction of a garage at the port's car terminal, it said.
The new garage will have a capacity of 6,000 parking spaces, which will increase the annual throughput of motor vehicles at the port of Koper by around 162,000 units, Luka Koper said in a statement last week.
The garage will meet the increasing customer demand for covered storage areas, while increasing the unique storage capacity and improving the internal logistics of car transshipment, the company said.
Last year, the number of cars handled by the port of Koper rose by 2% to 754,409, according to data from the company.
The car terminal at the port of Koper is one of the largest in the Mediterranean. According to 2018 data, Koper is among the top three European ports in the Mediterranean in terms of exports and imports of cars after Spain's Valencia and Barcelona.
Luka Koper's supervisory board approved an 18.9 million euro ($21.1 million) investment in the construction of a multi-storey garage in April 2017.
