LJUBLJANA (Slovenia), June 17 (SeeNews) – Slovenia’s infrastructure ministry is working on a project to connect the capital Ljubljana to Maribor by express trains, local media reported on Monday.
Infrastructure minister Alenka Bratusek will push for connecting several European cities by fast trains, which will be one of Slovenia's priorities during the country's forthcoming presidency of the Council of the EU, The Slovenia Times newspaper reported.
“I believe Slovenia should initiate the introduction of express trains on the route Vienna - Ljubljana - Venice, and the first fast connection we need to introduce would be between Ljubljana and Maribor, the two biggest Slovenian cities,” Bratusek was quoted as saying.
The initiative is expected to reduce the travel time between Ljubljana and Maribor to 50 minutes, from two to three hours at present, the newspaper said.
Slovenia will hold the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU in the second half of 2021.
