LJUBLJANA (Slovenia), January 25 (SeeNews) – Slovenia has detected its first case of the new highly infectious strain of the coronavirus first identified in the UK, prime minister Janez Jansa has said.
The strain was discovered in a citizen of Kosovo with temporary residence in Slovenia who has arrived from Belgium, Jansa told a news conference on Sunday, according to a video file posted on the website of the Slovenian government.
"We were notified through the European Early Warning System and the Belgian authorities informed us that we had a person who had been tested and found positive for the English strain of coronavirus on January 16," Jansa said.
The Slovenian government is likely to reintroduce some restriction measures on Wednesday or even earlier, he added.
According to data from the World Health Organisation, the total number of COVID-19 cases confirmed since the outbreak of the pandemic in Slovenia, a country with a population of 2.1 million, totalled 157,293 as of Sunday. The number of coronavirus-related deaths was 3,555.
