SOFIA (Bulgaria), October 17 (SeeNews) – The share of Bulgarians and Romanians at risk of poverty or social exclusion was the highest among EU member states in 2016, the bloc's statistical office said.
A total of 40.4% of Bulgarians and 38.8% of Romanians were at risk of poverty in 2016, Eurostat said in a statement on Monday.
Among EU member states in Southeast Europe, Slovenia was the only country to post a share below the EU average, with 18.4% of the Slovenian population at risk of poverty in 2016.
The EU average stood at 23.4% of the total population.
Croatia posted the fifth highest share, of 28.5%.
