BELGRADE (Serbia), March 5 (SeeNews) – The Belgrade city government said on Monday that based on the ballots cast in 71.39% of the polling stations, the conservative Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) won 45.6% of the votes in Sunday's local election in the capital city.
Based on the preliminary results, SNS won 64 of the 110 seats in the Belgrade city parliament, the city government said in a statement.
Second came former Belgrade mayor Dragan Djilas with 18.71% of the votes, securing him 26 seats, followed by the mayor of New Belgrade municipality, Dragan Sapic, with 8.27%, or 11 seats.
A coalition of the Serbian Socialist Party, led by foreign minister Ivica Dacic, and the centre-right United Serbia political party, chaired by Jagodina mayor Dragan Markovic, won 6.35% of the votes, or nine seats, the Belgrade city government said.
The four-year term of the Belgrade parliament and government expired in February.
In January, Serbian president Aleksandar Vucic, who is also leader of SNS, said surgeon Zoran Radojicic, a general manager of Belgrade's University Children's Clinic, will lead the SNS list in the Belgrade assembly elections.
The current mayor of Belgrade, Sinisa Mali, a member of the Presidency of SNS, officially took office in April 2014. However, he has been at the helm of Belgrade since November 2013, when he was named chairman of a temporary council governing the city until the local elections in March 2014 following a motion of no confidence against former mayor Dragan Djilas.
