October 22 (SeeNews) - Serbia's Free Zone Pirot has won the Global Free Zones of 2018 ranking for the region of Europe compiled by the fDi Intelligence magazine of the Financial Times, Serbia's finance minister Sinisa Mali said.
"This is a tremendous success, according to this ranking in the world, ahead of the Free Zone Pirot is just Dubai and the free zone in Thailand, while Shanghai, which has been at the top for years, is now beneath us on the list," Mali said in a press release on Saturday.
A total of 387 million euro ($445.5 million) was invested in Free Zone Pirot in the period 2012-2017, while the number of investors rose by 22% last year, Mali said.
The free zone in Pirot, in southeastern Serbia, offers investors a set of attractive incentives to encourage job creation as they enjoy excellent connectivity for the export of goods, the fDi Intelligence magazine said earlier this month.
The Serbian free zone occupied the third spot in the global ranking, fDi Intelligence said.
Tigar Tyres, the zone’s anchor tenant, which has invested 210 million euro in recent years, recently invested an additional 27 million euro in the first phase of a logistics and warehousing operation in the zone. A further 400 hectares of space is currently available for existing or future investors to take up to develop energy-efficient facilities.
($ = 0.868727 euro)
