August 13 (SeeNews) - The assembly of Serbia's Bor city has approved the transfer of the management of Bor airport to state-owned operator Aerodromi Srbije, the city government said.
It is much easier to invest in airports when they are run by a single company, and this is demonstrated by the fact that the city airport has never been operated at full swing, the city government said in a statement earlier this week.
The development plan of a mine in the Cukaru Peki area of the Timok copper-gold project by Rakita Exploration, a joint venture of China's Zijin Mining Group and US-based Freeport McMoran, envisages a location where a new airport with the same or better characteristics will be built, the city government said.
"The fact that Bor Airport will be part of a large system means that we will have investment, maintenance and functioning of the airport itself and staff that will raise the airport services to a higher level," Bor mayor Aleksandar Milikic said.
Aerodromi Srbije, a state-owned company in charge of the management, development and maintenance of all Serbian airports, started operations in February 2019. The company's first task was to open the Morava airport in Kraljevo for civil aviation operations following a 10 million euro ($11.8 million) conversion of the military air base there into a civilian airport. In August 2019, Aerodromi Srbije also took over the management of Konstantin Veliki airport in Nis.
