February 15 (SeeNews) - Serbia's prime minister Aleksandar Vucic said he has accepted his nomination for president made by the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) in order to ensure the stability of the country.
The nomination was discussed by members of the party's presidential council and the executive council will decide on the nomination on Friday, Vucic told Serbian public broadcaster Radio Televizija Srbije (RTS) on Tuesday.
The presidential council has 30 members and its main task is to control the work of the representatives of SNS in the government. The executive board is in charge of implementing the decisions taken by the national council of the party.
Vucic said he will focus on his activities as prime minister until March 1 or 2, when the date of the presidential elections will be announced, and explained that he does not plan to keep the position of head of government if he loses the presidential elections.
Therefore, the possibility for early parliamentary elections in Serbia should not be ruled out, Vucic said.
The term of office of incumbent Serbian president Tomislav Nikolic will expire on March 31, 2017. According to Serbian media reports, the presidential elections will be held in early April.
In January, the government coalition partner of SNS, the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS), said that the two parties will have a joint candidate in the presidential elections.
Earlier this month, Serbian ombudsman Sasa Jankovic announced he would run for president, supported by opposition Democratic Party, while Bosko Obradovic, chairman of another opposition party, Dveri, also announced he would run.
Vuk Jeremic, who served as Serbia's foreign minister between 2007 and 2012 and was President of the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly between September 2012 and September 2013, will also run.
