BELGRADE (Serbia), April 24 (SeeNews) – Serbia's Administrative Court has suspended the launch of construction of a gondola lift in Belgrade's Kalemegdan park, the government said.
The project will remain suspended until a final court decision is taken on the legality of the building permit issued by the infrastructure ministry for preparatory works related to the construction of the gondola lift, the government said in a statement on Tuesday.
"The building permit for preparatory works was issued in accordance with the current spatial plan of the city of Belgrade, as well as in accordance with the decision of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments. The permit refers to preparatory archaeological works in Kalemegdan park," the government said.
The Administrative Court made its decision on April 19 following a complaint against the project submitted by Belgrade-based non-governmental organisation Renewables and Environmental Regulatory Institute (RERI), public broadcaster RTS reported on Tuesday.
In December, the Belgrade city government awarded the construction of a gondola lift in the Serbian capital to a consortium led by Italian company Leitner. The project involves the construction of a gondola lift which will link the Kalemegdan park to the Usce neighbourhood located where the Sava river flows into the Danube.
