BELGRADE (Serbia), January 23 (SeeNews) – Serbia plans to accelerate works on the adoption of a National Emission Reduction Plan (NERP), in order to limit air pollution, the government said, responding to criticism by the Energy Community.
The plan will verify previous activities and define new targets to reduce air pollution, the government said in a statement on Wednesday.
Among the discussed measures are the granting of subsidies for the purchase of electric and hybrid vehicles, the conversion of coal-fired power plants to biomass and the development of smart cities, the government said.
The Energy Community, an organisation promoting the establishment of an integrated European energy market, said last week it has opened a dispute settlement procedure against Serbia over the lack of adoption of a National Emission Reduction Plan. The secretariat approved the draft NERP of Serbia in 2016. In the past years, the secretariat has repeatedly called upon the Serbian authorities for its adoption, which however has not happened, the Energy Community said.
