December 13 (SeeNews) - Serbia plans to start the project for the overhaul of the Belgrade-Nis railway line in March 2022, President Aleksandar Vucic has said.
"In March we will start working on the first segment of 21 km from Stalac to Djunis. The works should be completed by 2024 when the bypass railway around Nis will be completed," Vucic said in a statement on Friday.
The project for the reconstruction of the Nis-Zajecar railway line, Vucic said.
Following the revamp, the 204 km-long Nis-Belgrade railway line, which lies on European transport Corridor X, will support 200 km/h train speed, which means that the Nis-Belgrade distance will be covered in an hour and 15 minutes.
Last month, infrastructure minister Tomislav Momirovic said Serbia aims to complete the overhaul and electrification of a 100 km railway line linking Nis to Dimitrovgrad, on the Bulgarian border, at the beginning of 2024.
Following the overhaul, passenger and freight travel speed will increase to 120 km/h from 30 km/h.
