April 23 (SeeNews) - Serbia's government plans to launch civil aviation operations at Morava military airport in Kraljevo in the coming months, infrastructure minister Zorana Mihajlovic has said.
With the start of civilian flights at the airport, central Serbia will be able to take advantage of the opportunities from passenger transport, but above all, from cargo transport, Mihajlovic said in a video file posted on the website of news agency Tanjug on Friday.
"All airports in Serbia need government support to be able to grow and we will continue to offer it," she added.
Тhe Serbian government completed the first phase of the reconstruction of Morava airport in 2011 allowing the handling of commercial aircraft with up to 100 seats. However, no commercial flights have been operated from the airport thus far.
In the second phase, which has not started yet, the runway will be broadened to 45 metres from 30 metres, enabling the handling of the largest aircraft. In 2015, the Serbian government announced plans to open Morava airport by mid-2016.
