BELGRADE (Serbia), July 6 (SeeNews) – Serbia said it is launching an EU-backed project for the construction of a water treatment plant in the country’s north worth 23.6 million euro ($34.1 million).
The plant will treat water from the Great Backa Canal and will benefit 150,000 people in the municipalities of Vrbas and Kula, the government said in a statement on Tuesday.
The European Union provided 60% of the total project funding while the remainder is covered by the governments of Serbia and its autonomous province of Vojvodina.
The deal for the project funding that will introduce European environmental standards was signed by the EU and Serbian local government officials.
The feasibility study for the project was financed by the Netherlands with 1.2 million euro.
The 118 kilometer Great Backa Canal links the Danube with the Tisza river.
