August 22 (SeeNews) - Serbia is considering the reintroduction of compulsory military service for men in 2020 in a bid to boost its defence, president Aleksandar Vucic said.
"We are working on this to preserve peace, to be sufficiently strong and preventively act against anyone who attempts to carry out any form of aggression against Serbia," Vucic said, as quoted in a statement by the defence ministry on Tuesday.
The length of the military service would most likely be three or six months, he added.
"I think one year would be too long. But we are still analysing [the different options]," Vucic said, adding that the final decision will lie with the defence ministry and will depend on the available financial resources.
Serbia abolished six-month conscription for men on January 1, 2011.
