September 5 (SeeNews) - Serbia and Bulgaria have signed an agreement on cooperation in the maintenance of the navigability of the Danube waterway, Serbia's ministry of construction, transport and infrastructure said.
Serbia's construction minister Tomislav Momirovic said that Serbia and Bulgaria will jointly carry out intervention dredging works and, in conditions of extremely low water levels, ensure the navigability of Danube waterway in the key section between kilometres 610 and 375, the ministry said in a press release on Saturday.
Momirovic added that the maintenance works that will be carried out in the Bulgarian section of maintenance of the waterway will help Serbia gain access to more than one million tons of coal, and more than 400,000 tons of grain, as well as products for the steel and chemical industry, which is impossible now due to the low water level.
Danube is navigable through Serbia, but there are 14 critical points in Bulgaria that prevent the delivery of coal and grain, according to Serbian media reports.
