March 23 (SeeNews) - Improving energy and transport infrastructure connectivity, including through the construction of gas pipelines from Greece via Bulgaria to Romania, is a common goal for the three countries, which could in part be backed financially by NATO, Bulgaria's president Rumen Radev said.
"Some of these projects could be implemented with [support from] NATO financial mechanisms, on which countries in the region will insist at the forthcoming NATO summit in two days," Radev said, as quoted by his office on Tuesday.
Radev told public broadcaster BNR that a network of gas pipelines could be built along NATO's entire eastern flank.
Earlier on Tuesday, Bulgaria's prime minister Kiril Petkov said that a Bulgaria-Greece gas interconnector is likely to start bringing in natural gas from Azerbaijan in September.
Like other EU members, Bulgaria, which is almost fully reliant on Russian gas and oil for its energy needs, is seeking alternatives to diversify its energy supply in light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
