February 22 (SeeNews) - Irish low-cost air carrier Ryanair said on Thursday it will close its one aircraft base in the western city of Timisoara on March 25 due to weak commercial performance.
Ryanair’s decision to close its Timisoara base results from its weak commercial performance at a time when there is growing demand for Ryanair aircraft at other airports across Europe, Ryanair said in a press release.
Two routes to Milan and Bucharest to and from Timisoara will continue to operate on non-based aircraft for the summer 2018 schedule.
All affected customers will be notified by email and SMS, and advised of their options – a full refund or free transfer on to an alternative route, it added.
"We regret the closure of our one aircraft Timisoara base from 25th March next, which is due to weak commercial performance. Two routes to Milan and Bucharest will continue to operate on non-based aircraft as part of our summer 2018 schedule," Ryanair’s chief commercial officer David O’Brien said.
"Ryanair’s current winter programme which includes seven Timisoara routes will continue to operate as planned until the closure of the base on the 25th of March, and we apologise to any customers inconvenienced by this decision."
Ryanair operates 21 routes from airports in Romania, namely Timisoara, Bucharest and Craiova. Last year, the company transported 2.6 million passengers in Romania, and for 2018 it estimates a 40% increase.
