April 19 (SeeNews) - Russian railway engineering company RZD International said on Wednesday it has completed ahead of schedule the reconstruction of the Vinarci - Djordjevo railway section of Trans-European transport Corridor X in Serbia.
The project included the full rehabilitation of more than 15 km of track line, laying of eight switches, reconstruction of 11 road crossings, main tracks at the Leskovac and Djordjevo stations and 350 m of low platforms, drainage system works, as well as rehabilitation of signalling and telecommunications systems, the Russian company said in a statement.
Reconstruction works on the railway section were performed together with Serbian subcontractors during 36-hour technological traffic breaks without halting traffic altogether.
After the reconstruction, the maximum travel speed on the section, which previously did not exceed 50 km/h, can be raised up to 120 km/h, RZD International added.
By finishing works on the Vinarci - Djordjevo stretch the Russian company has completed the rehabilitation of three sections at the southern part of Corridor X under a $38 million (35.4 million euro) contract with Serbian state-run railway infrastructure operator, Infrastruktura Zeleznice Srbije.
Corridor X is projected to connect Salzburg in Austria to the Greek port of Thessaloniki, passing through Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Macedonia.
