October 8 (SeeNews) - Romania's unemployment rate rose to 6.9% in September from 6.6% a month earlier, the government's employment agency, ANOFM, said on Thursday.

In September, the southwestern county of Mehedinti registered the highest unemployment rate in Romania, 12.8%. The capital Bucharest and th Ilfov county, in southern Romania, had the lowest rate, of 2.0% and 2.1%, respectively.
The average unemployment rate in Romania fell to a 17-year low of 4.0% last year from 4.3% in 2007. In 1991, the average unemployment rate was 1.8%. Romania's workforce is estimated at 9.3 million out of a population of 21.5 million.
