October 2 (SeeNews) - The number of tourists staying in Romania fell by 52.2% on the year to 4.367 million in the first eight months of 2020, the statistics board, INS said on Friday.
The new data includes the impact of the COVID-19 crisis and of the measures taken by the authorities to curb the spread of the virus, INS said in a statement. At the time of the research, some 465 units were closed due to COVID-19, INS added.
Tourists spent 10.16 million overnights in Romania in the first eight months of 2020, down 51.3% year-on-year.
Foreign tourist numbers fell by an annual 80.2% to 360,700 during January-August.
In August alone, total tourist numbers fell by an annual 30.4%, as the number of foreign tourist was 89.7% lower on the year.
Confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Romania reached 129,658 while the death toll rose to 4,862, latest data from authorities showed.

The number of tourists staying in Romania in 2019 rose 3.6% on the year to 13.26 million.
