November 28 (SeeNews) - Romanian railway operator CFR said on Monday that it signed a contract worth 1.91 billion lei ($404 million/387.8 million euro) with Spanish company FCC Construccion for the modernisation of railway infrastructure on the Lugoj-Timisoara section.
The contract has a duration of 42 months, including six months for the design and 36 months for the actual works, CFR said in a press release.
Following the works, the 54.1-kilometre railway section will support speed of up to 160 km/h for passenger and freight trains.
The contract envisages the addition of a second track, the reconstruction of several train stations and bridges and installing automated signaling systems at road crossings.
The financing is provided from non-reimbursable funds under the EU-backed National Plan for Recovery and Resilience, PNRR.
This is the fourth PNRR-financed contract that CFR signs in 2022, transportation minister Sorin Grindeanu said in a social media post.
CFR was founded in 1880 and currently manages approximately 10,628 km of railway infrastructure.
Earlier this month, CFR announced that a tie-up between Spain's FCC Construccion, Turkey's Gulermak and France's CCN signed a 2.11 billion lei contract for for the electrification and modernisation of the railway infrastructure and superstructure on the Poieni-Alesd section.
