August 22 (SeeNews) - Romanian railway operator CFR said on Monday it signed a 8.77 billion lei ($1.81 billion/ 1.79 billion euro) financing deal with the transport ministry for the rehabilitation of a 162 km railway section using European funds made available under the country's Resilience and Recovery National Plan, PNRR.
Following the upgrade, the Caransebes - Timisoara - Arad railway section will support travel speed of up to 160 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for freight trains, CFR said in a press release.
Works on the railway sections have been divided in four lots, for which constructors have been assigned following public tenders. Contracts will be signed after the expiration of the period for submitting any appeals and, respectively, after the settlement of all appeals and complaints made after the tender.
According to data posted on CFR's website, the contract for the first lot between Caransebes and Lugoj was won by Italian industrial construction group Webuild and Italian group Salcef, while Spain's Spain's FCC Construccion won the contract for the second lot between Lugoj and Timisoara Est.
Webuild, Salcef and Italy's Partecipazioni Italia SPA won the Timisoara Est - Ronat Triaj contract, as well as lot four between Ronat Triaj and Arad.
The Caransebes - Timisoara - Arad railway section is part of the Orient - East Med Corridor of the The Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).
Romania is expected to receive 29.2 billion euro of grants and loans from the RRF. The Romanian National Recovery and Resilience Plan was approved by the European Council in October.
