September 9 (SeeNews) - One of the two units of Romania's sole nuclear power plant Cernavoda has been shut down over a technical problem which has had no negative impact on the environment or the population, the plant's operator, Nuclearelectrica [BSE:SNN], said on Tuesday.
The plant disconnected Unit 2 from the national power grid at 1630 CET on Monday in order to fix a malfunction at the power generator, Nuclearelectrica said in a statement.
A team of specialists is investigating the cause of the malfunction and the unit will be reconnected to the grid once the problem is fixed, the company added.
The plant in Cernavoda, in southeastern Romania, operates two reactors of 700 megawatts each, which cover around one fifth of Romania's electricity consumption.
