November 9 (SeeNews) - Romania's Black Sea resort Saturn will be modernized through investment of 20 million lei ($4.9 million/ 4.3 million euro) of EU funds, Mangalia municipal council said on Friday.
The municipal authorities hope to attract more tourists following the upgrade of the outdated Communist-era coastal resort, it said in a press release.
Rehabilitation works will include repairs of roads and pavements, upgrading public lighting systems, as well as in adding modern urban furniture and green spaces.
"We have submitted this project in the autumn of 2016. After nearly two years of analyzes and evaluations, we signed the financing agreement this summer. Now we are in the auction period and we hope to start works on site at the beginning of next year," Mangalia mayor Radu Cristian said.
"We are pleased to have opened the series of rehabilitation of resorts in the southern coastal area. By the end of this year, we will sign other EU-funded contracts, namely for the modernization of Neptun-Olimp and the Mangalia-Saturn promenade," the mayor added.
In addition to these projects, Mangalia city hall is in the pre-contracting phase of other EU-funded investment projects: rehabilitation of the Sf. Gheorghe historical monument, modernization of the Republic Square and asphalting of 17 streets.
