September 9 (SeeNews) - Romania's unemployment rate rose to 6.6% in August from 6.3% a month earlier, the government's employment agency, ANOFM, said on Wednesday.

In August, the northeastern county of Vaslui registered the highest unemployment rate in Romania, 12.5%. The Ilfov county, in southern Romania, had the lowest rate, of 1.8%.
The average unemployment rate in Romania fell to a 17-year low of 4.0% last year from 4.3% in 2007. In 1991, the average unemployment rate was 1.8%. Romania's workforce is estimated at 9.3 million out of a population of 21.5 million.
