Romanian ruling coalition partners unveil new government lineup

Romanian ruling coalition partners unveil new government lineup Viorica Dancila

January 26 (SeeNews) - Romania's left-wing Social Democrat Party (PSD) and its coalition partner, centre-right Liberal-Democrat Alliance (ALDE), on Friday named the ministers in their new government, which is expected to be voted into office on Monday.

The proposed government comprises four ALDE ministers, 23 PSD ministers and one technocrat member, prime minister-designate Viorica Dancila said in a statement broadcast by local TV station Digi 24.

Seventeen of the newly proposed ministers come from the outgoing government led by Mihai Tudose.

Starting Monday morning, the new ministers will be heard by committees in parliament and, most probably, their nominations will be put to the vote in parliament in the evening, Dancila said.

PSD and ALDE control among themselves 250 of 465 seats in parliament.

Danut Andrusca, a former economy minister counselor, was proposed as minister of economy.

A former finance minister during March-November 2015 and EU funds minister from December 2012 to March 2015, Eugen Teodorovici will head the finance ministry.

Rovana Plumb will lead the EU funds ministry. Plumb headed the same ministry during February - October 2017.

The only technocrat member in the government will be justice minister Tudorel Toader, who held the same post in the last two PSD governments.

On Saturday, some 100,000 Romanians again took to the streets in the capital Bucharest and other cities against planned changes to the Criminal Code that they see as an attempt to backtrack on the fight against corruption.

The rallies came just three days after Romania's president Klaus Iohannis approved the nomination of Viorica Dancila as prime minister, to replace Mihai Tudose who resigned after PSD withdrew its support for him.

Dancila, 54, has been a PSD member for 21 years and is currently serving a second term as member of the European Parliament. Since 2015, she is president of the PSD women's organisation.
